Belly rubs, fetching, ear scratches… if you’re an animal lover you probably are already squirming thinking how much you might miss your doggo back home or how much you’d love to have some animal friend around you, we feel ya! That’s why we have put together a comprehensive list of places where you could adopt, foster or volunteer and get a bit of quality time with man’s best friends.
While numbers have improved and wfh has encouraged a lot of people to either adopt or foster there are still more than 1,2 mio stray pets in Mexico city alone, and over 25mio in Mexico as a whole. Animal rescues have also been incredibly hit with the brunt of the pandemic and the economic downturn, so you can make a lot of karma points (plus getting a lot of sloppy kisses) if you were to support any of these organisations.

Perhaps one of the most committed organisations in Mexico, Milagros Caninos takes care of the hardest cases, blind dogs, tortured dogs, dogs with serious medical conditions… they do have some for adoption but mainly they are looking for volunteers that can help the more than 300 doggos they have in their care, also, their website is in English!

This place is not only a good adoption/volunteer centre, they also provide sterilization and vet services at amazing prices! As if this was not enough, they also count with the first Emergency Ambulance for animals that would bring any injured animal to their clinic.

You want to start with an absolute unique story with your new pup? Head to the Centro de Transferencia that is run by Mexico’s subway system! Yep, you read that right, 3 years ago they launched this unique in the world rescue/adopt service for dogs found over Mexican subway systems!

This place is awesome because, while not a registered non-profit they really make an amazing job trying to help as many animals (dogs & cats) as possible. With over 180 animals in their care they’re constantly looking for loving homes for their pups as well as volunteers that can help them in various tasks. If what you’re looking is to become the slave of your cat master Gatogazzu is an amazing enclave to celebrate and protect all things cat. Order from the human (& cat!) bakery, buy some artisanal beer and visit the catferia to get some funds to care for their rescues. They also run several sterilisation campaigns which are primordial since cats are incredibly prolific.

A donkey sanctuary is not something you see every day, but in case you don’t know there has been a huge decrease of the burro population in Mexico. Burrolandia allows you to spend a day of fun with these lovely animals, a mere 26mins from Teotihuacan make a full day trip and go visit!

If your kid has been pleading for some riding lessons or you simply want to spend the day with horses that are now living their best life this place is for you! A sanctuary for horses that come from all walks of life, and some extra animals like piglets and sheep, go for a full day, you can even stay the night.
