Pets make life so much better, whether you brought them with you from your home country or whether you just adopted a new doggo there’s nothing as exciting as discovering your new town with your best bud. But before any exploration, make sure Fido has all his vaccines. An important note is that some treatments that might not have been necessary in your hometown, will be necessary here, so here’s the round (plus average prices) for you to go directly to the vet!
First and foremost, Mexico not only requires several vaccinations but also an internal and external parasite treatment, that needs to be inoculated 6 months after arriving Mexico or should be given to your pup after his first 30 days of life. Speaking to my vet (not mine, my dog’s) she recommended to switch treatments on a regular basis. Let’s say last time you used Advantix, she strongly encourages you to use Paradex or Advantage next time. Same goes for internal treatments, parasites sometimes get cosy with the same medicine. If your dog is constantly in parks (Namely dog parks or doggy school) there is a high chance he might catch some unknown bug from his new friends.
Don’t forget to give treatment to your pup for ticks, not as common in CDMX, but if you want to explore or take her out in the woods this will also protect him from all creepy crawlies. Lastly, consider that water in Mexico might not have the same microorganisms that where you came from so consult with your vet in case s/he recommends probiotics or anything else.
Just like in almost every country, the most important vaccine is Rabies, if your pet came with your from abroad s/he will have it already but if you’re getting a pup make sure it does get it. Dogs may also be vaccinated for: Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parvovirus and Parainfluenza and if we’re talking cats they may also be vaccinated for: Feline panleukopenia (Distemper): Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus and Leukemia. (The latter are only recommendations).
Prices for the vaccination range from 200 for a single dose of Rabies vaccine for a pup to over 900 MXN for a 5 doses combination depending on what vet praxis you go to. (Note that prices vary wildly and if you’re looking for an English speaking vet that would probably hike your price). If you want to know an average on prices done by the Mexican Government here’s a link to their report to PROFECO (in Spanish).
