Ramen Fix at Yamasan Ramen House

Oh to happily slurp your noodles in Shinjuku … I had a full food bucket list leaving Asia, but with CoVid and whatnot (container, goodbye parties, dog relocation, etc) I was not able to hit the ramen shops. (But seriously, if you had to pick in between having Pho or Ramen which one would you go to first?) I decided ramen had to wait and anyway, there is a direct Mexico-Narita… I have no clue when will I hit Hanoi again.

So here we are, far far away from Shinjuku and deciding what to eat mid-week. We just hit our third Airbnb and we’re absolutely sick of our suitcases and this transient life, we need comfort food and we need it fast.

Lo and behold we turn around a corner in Tamaulipas and we find not, one, not 2, but like 5 different Asian places, Ramen, Pho (yassss! I am leaving that for emergencies so no review any time soon), and even Dim Sum (hello char siu bao!) 2 blocks from our home!!! I almost teared up I was so happy. There are two ramen places, and we decided to hit the first one, the décor inside looked so very Japanese, but to be on the safe side, and because our massive dog is with us we decide to sit outside. Outdoor seating is not fancy, but it will have to do, if the ramen is good I am willing to feel like I’m in Shibuya.

Ok so… menu wise, there’s everything for your heart’s content, ramen (obvs!) but also Gyozas and Edamame (I might have an addiction). They also served fried noodles and tons of sake, thanks to the Mexican Ley Seca we were forced to drink soft drinks but oh well, you can’t have everything.

Now to the food, we went for Gyoza and the Yamasan Ramen, I added an extra topping of spicy because #mexican and we waited impatiently for the food. Gyoza was great, I’m not a big fan but I happily devoured two of them, if anything , the dough consistency was a bit too soft to my liking but the filling was delicious. The ramen hit all the spots… I would perhaps loose a bit of the corn (sorry I never had ramen with corn before) and I felt there was a bit too many veggies on my soup but the Kakuni was perfectly cooked and the broth was rich and thick.

As we left, life seemed a bit better than when we arrived, “home” didn’t feel as far away as it did 40 minutes ago, and to make the night even better, we stumbled on a frozen yoghurt two steps away from our Ramen House, like Mexicans say “Barriga llena, Corazon contento”.
