Acapulco, your Long Weekend Getaway

Open YouTube and type Acapulco and you will immediately see some very ominous warnings about it being one of the most dangerous cities in Mexico…. Scratch Mexico, apparently the mortality rate in Acapulco is one of the highest in the world, and while this might be well the case, Acapulco is so much more than the bloody headlines that tend to be published in the media.

Four hours away from CDMX, the coastal town that was frequented by so many Hollywood stars in the 60s hosts now 3 very distinct areas: Acapulco Viejo -Old Acapulco-, La Costera and Acapulco Diamante. It also encompasses some of the most beautiful beaches and vistas in the Pacific Ocean. Acapulco is now the go-to place for Chilangos looking for a long holiday, or getting married, so, if you’re invited to a beach wedding do not miss it! Even better, combine Acapulco with Taxco and make an entire holiday of the trip.

There is no shortage of places to stay in Acapulco, hotels for every single budget and taste are available, Airbnb’s, hostels and even private bedrooms can be found across the city. However, we would strongly suggest that, while tempting, you don’t go off the beaten path in this trip, and you stick to the tourist area, then, get your bikini going and go relax at the beach.

Acapulco is the quintessential beach town, so if you’re looking for culture, arts and anthropological discoveries you might feel disappointed, keep your intellectual curiosity on the back burner and relax for a week, even better, talking to a friend about this article he immediately interjected, Acapulco is not only ideal for some beach fun, it is also absolutely fabulous for anyone Working from Home, so if you love beautiful sunsets and yoga by the beach this town might be a great place for you.

Transportation in Acapulco is not comprehensive, so our recommendation would be to rent a car during your stay or drive here. Four hrs from CDMX on the highway makes this a pleasant ride… once you arrive head to the Escénica or one of the many restaurants on this road to watch the sunset on the bay which is absolutely fabulous. You can also go to the beach Revolcadero, a good and long strip of beach that has lovely sunsets. Bring a bottle of wine, the family, (dog included) and relax there.

If you’re an early riser we will strongly suggest to go to Playa Condesa that will be full of tourists later on the day and enjoy what used to be the most touristy area of Acapulco 30 years ago, the beach is beautiful, and you can see all the big resorts & the beautiful Roqueta island in front of you. Another option is to take your board and surf at Playa Bonfil and if you’re very VERY lucky you might be able to see some stingrays and turtles or perhaps swim with dolphins. Fancy a run? Go back to Revolcadero beach and do your workout, you can also choose to run besides at the Vidanta/Mayan Palace golf club… Once you’re done with the exercise, stay there, sand, sun and waves, what else do you need in life?

Do you have some teens or tweens on toll? Do not miss Xtasea, the longest zip line over the sea, the restaurant at the end of the adventure is GREAT for watching the sunset and the food is not bad! You can also take them to La Isla, an open shopping mall that hosts like 4 different ice cream shops and a huge collection of bikini shops.

No visit to Acapulco would be full without a visit to La Quebrada, perhaps one of the most known spots in the city. Divers plunge to the sea from a 40m cliff, precisely calculating the incoming wave. Head to the hotel El Mirador and watch with a margarita in hand, or you can also go to the vantage point and watch from there.

Last but not least, food. The Pacific Ocean doesn’t boast the complexity of Mexican food found elsewhere, but this would not be Mexico if it didn’t have some traditions, first the Pozole Verde (green pozole) which for some reason needs to be eaten on Thursdays. You will find the most expensive and the cheapest places all around, beware, places will be beaming so you better make reservations. A traditional one would be La Casa de Tere, a nice place with a view would be Si Señor. Being a beach town, seafood is seriously good as well, and if you need to try one thing that’d be Pescado a la Talla, a full fish, grilled on a spicy sauce, normally eaten with tortillas. Beto Godoy is the place where everyone goes, but this author really likes Paco's over la Costera (pro tip, try one pescado a la talla and one huerfanito… thank me later).

Don’t let the stern warnings deter you from a truly iconic and relaxing place. Acapulco was loved and known for a reason: the beauty of the beaches, the amazing weather throughout the year and the breathtaking sunrises and sunsets, be safe but give it a try!
