Valentines feeling like a slap in the face? Well, worry not, Mexico has a way to make everyone feel included! Turns out, Mexican Saint Valentines is not only a day to celebrate couple’s love, but friendship as well. No need to mop at home watching romcoms, this is a day to celebrate friendship, romantic love and so much more!
Taken from the US tradition, Saint Valentines is hugely celebrated across Mexico, flowers, chocolates and lots of kissing across the city, but, there is one addendum, Saint Valentine’s is also a celebration of friendship which means, friends get together and exchange small gifts, candies, balloons and if you have children there is a big possibility that they will have a flower exchange at school.
Gather your friends (even if virtually) and make sure you have some little treats for everyone, they will certainly feel your appreciation.
For Couples, Valentine’s the Mexican Way: Serenatas!
Do you want to REALLY celebrate your Valentine the Mexican way? Grab yourself a bunch of musicians and head over to express your love musically. There are a bunch of different musical groups that you can hire but the obvious ones are mariachis. In the olden days, the suitor would head at dusk to his beloved’s home and sing along with the mariachis some love songs, the girl, would discreetly peer through the curtains and, after several songs, if the family approved, she would go out the balcony to thank the music.
Nowadays unfortunately we don’t all have balconies, but you can still surprise your valentine with some nice music. If you are looking to hire some musicians, head to Garibaldi, you will find a vast array of groups that would gladly sing for you. The music is typical Mexican folk songs, that sing to love and betrayal, but let the beautiful harp, violins and guitars do the talking and just enjoy the show. At a loss of some of the most known songs? Our recommendations would be: Serenata Huasteca, Deja que Salga la Luna, Somos Novios, Si nos dejan, Besame Mucho, Malagueña, Paloma Querida, & Cucurrucucu Paloma.
If you’re looking for other type of music, you can also hire trios (3 singers with guitars) that traditionally sing “boleros” romantic songs with soft music. Also, if you absolutely want to wow the neighbors (and perhaps get a lawsuit) nowadays you can also hire Norteño music, that is quite loud, rhythmic and very fast. Whichever group you decide to hire, this def qualifies as a Grand Gesture:)
